Who you are…
As a parent, you are concerned about your highly sensitive child’s wellbeing in school. You might feel guilty of not being able to fully support your sensitive child’s struggle. You wish you knew how, to whom, and where to turn to. Your child is having more physical complaints lately. Your child might wake up even tired and anxious, just because it is a school day.
Your child is starting to say depressing things like; “I can’t do this”, I am dumb”, “school is boring”, “why am I here?”. Your child is getting less motivated or maybe has become aggressive at times, while in the beginning your child was so eager and enthusiastic to learn.
You notice that you tend to do the little things that make your child’s life less burdensome. For example; you arrive at the school earlier. You know that when your child sees you already waiting outside they will feel relieved. You promise ‘fun’ things after school or in their lunch box, because then your child has something exciting to look forward to during their school day. You might be overruled by the non-verbal language of the school team when you try to explain your child’s highly sensitive needs. You might have the feeling that school is willing, but just doesn’t know how to manage and is not fully aware of high sensitivity. School says that your child can’t focus in class and might be having a learning disorder. Your gut feeling might say it is not a disorder, rather, your child is highly sensitive. The thought of taking your child out of school might have crossed your mind, but once in a while your child’s teacher does something that is temporarily helping your child. Then you have some ‘hope and relieve’ and start to doubt yourself again. You have thoughts like ‘your child is familiar with the school environment and might have finally made a ‘friend’. You often feel alone and unsupported and it’s likely you’re exhausted from ‘defending’ your child’s sensitive needs. Sometimes you wonder “How is my child going to survive in this overwhelming world?”
What you want…
You just want to grant your child peace and calm in mind and feel safe in this world. This way they can fall asleep easily and wake up energized and motivated without anxiety on ‘a school day’. You want your child to be seen, heard, understood and appreciated in a learning environment that suits their needs. Then your child will be able to thrive with all of their highly sensitive talents and no longer have a negative self-image. You want your child to be able to enjoy the beautiful things in life, especially the small things. You want your child to set healthy boundaries and stay true to who they really are. You want them to be proud of their beautiful sensitive trait and cherish it. It would be great if your child could say ‘NO’ with ease and without the self-shame and guilt afterwards. In doing this your child might be able to build their self-confidence back up again. Then they would be able to work through their possible fear of failure. You want your child to be appreciated for who they are and not be judged for their individuality and uniqueness. You want to advocate for your child in a healthier and grounded way so that you may stay close to your own values and be able to recognize your blind spots as situations arise. Deep down you know that your child is walking a totally different path than what was intended for them. You don’t want to do this alone anymore. You want in depth understanding and a quality support safety net and no more unnecessary stress for your child.
What you know you need…
You need someone who sees your ‘whole’ sensitive child and is able to get to their core by working from various in-depth perspectives and not just one to three. You want to get to what is really bothering your child and recognize what obstacles are in the way. You need help hearing what your sensitive child isn’t saying in specific words, but by their behaviour. You need a qualified International Hsp Professional with ALSO extensive true life experiences as a primary school teacher, special education teacher, as a parent of highly sensitive children. You need someone who shows you how to have faith and trust in following your own intuition by showing you other perspectives. You need someone who helps you advocate for your child in school because you might have the feeling that school ‘blames’ you for your child’s struggle, which doesn’t have to be the actual case. You need someone who understands that heavy sensitive weight on your and your child’s sensitive shoulders. Someone who shows you how to set healthy boundaries for you and your child. Because you might have the tendency to put everyone else’s opinions above your own intuition.
